At its height, the Roman empire stretched across Europe, Asia and Africa, encompassing all sorts of different peoples, cultures and locations. With such a large amount of territory (and so many regions to travel to which they did not control), it stands to reason that trade would be a major engine in the Roman economy. Think about modern economies -- can you think of any country in the world with a strong economy that is not focused on international trade? Of course not! The Romans were no different and in this unit we will unpack how trade in the Roman world functioned and the importance it had on Roman life.
